Battal Mosque and Tomb
Located in Melikgazi District, Battalgazi Neighborhood, the mosque is one of the first mosques of Anatolia, built on the outer castle walls. The mosque, which was repaired in 1825, is still open for worship today. There is a tomb, which was designed adjacent to the northeast of the mosque, which was built on a high hill, and whose crypt has reached today. The upper floor of the tomb was destroyed, and the lower floor covered with a barrel vault has survived to the present day.
During the campaigns against Byzantium in the VIII century during the Umayyad period, Battal Gazi showed great heroism and an epic personality emerged. It is known that the death of Battal Gazi took place in 122/740 near Afyonkarahisar. It is seen that there are works made in the name of Battal Gazi, who reached great fame in Anatolia. It can be thought that the Battal Gazi Mosque and tomb were built in memory of Battal Gazi during the time of the Danishmends. Considering the issues mentioned in the sources, although the exact date of construction is not known, it is accepted that the structures may have been built in the second half of the 12th century.
